What is acne?

Although usually associated with spots on the chin in teenagers, pimples or blackheads, acne is an embarrassing condition. Whilst it affects 80% of teenagers, it also affects men and women of all ages, representing 15-20% of all dermatology consultations.

Acne can be extremely irritating, especially if your skin feels oily, sensitive or if you're developing acne scars. The scarring that can remain after acne outbreak is often just as distressing, and can be permanent if not treated.

The medical explanation for acne is that it is a common and chronic skin disease, involving inflammation of the sebaceous glands.

Acne Creams and Treatments: Private vs NHS

NHS acne treatments for acne vulgaris and cystic acne are limited to basic strength benzoyl peroxide and antibiotics (Erythromycin antibiotic acne creams or Lymecycline antibiotic tablets). Dermatologists tend to prescribe Isotretinoin/Roaccutane acne tablets which can have serious side effects, require blood monitoring and contraception, if you're a female.

ZO® Skin Health Prescription skincare for acne, cystic acne, blackheads and acne scars

The mainstay of NHS acne creams and treatments are benzyl peroxide, antibiotics and retinoid creams.

Privately, Dr Paulina recommends and prescribes Dr Obagi's ZO® Skin Health which brings innovative skincare, bridging a gap between medical treatments and daily skin care.

It is officially the Number 1 skincare brand for Aesthetic Doctors' in Europe and has been listed in Vogue's Magazine Beauty Hall of Fame.

Medical grade skincare has much stronger specialist prescription ingredients to what is available on NHS. For example, NHS maximum strength Benzyl Peroxide is 2.5% and ZO® Skin Health strength offers Benzyl Peroxide 10%. Prescription skincare also also use the latest technology and also are molecular to target specific cells to change their function.

As part of a consultation, you will receive a Personalised ZO® Skincare routine and acne treatment plan.

It can include a cleanser, scrub and a toner, best face creams for acne and a specialised SPF face cream.
